Happy Chinese New Year!

新年好

Happy New Year, and may you experience good health and good fortune!
The Chinese New Year is a celebration of the lunar year cycle, and in 2020 it lands on January 25th.  Festivities have been under-way since the 17th, and will culminate with the Lantern Festival on February 8th.

This year is the year of the Yang Metal Rat.  There's a lot of energy in Chinese calendrical science, and can be interpreted on multiple levels - here's our take on it.

The Rat

The Rat is known in the Chinese zodiac creation story as an animal of cunning because of an ancient myth or story, of which there are many variations.  The emperor or perhaps Buddha arranged a race amongst the animals for the purpose of time telling.  The animals had to cross a river with a strong current and make it to the finish line on the opposite shore.

The Rat was smart enough to know this would be difficult and hopped onto the back of the diligent and hard-working Ox, who obliged.  The Rat made in on the back of the Ox and jumped ahead to finish first, becoming the animal marking the beginning of the lunar year.

Perhaps we can be like the rat by valuing the hard work of others, finding a supportive team, and using our intelligence to make it to the finish lines in our lives.

Yang Metal

Yang metal can be pictured as an axe, and this energy is good for making clear boundaries and decisions.  (Yin metal is more the energy of precious minerals, sparking examination and appreciation of value.)

Metal energy in general is also good for helping us to let go of that which is no longer working in our lives and make way for what can, or to put it simply, "Out with the old, in with the new."

For this Yang Metal year, virtues to cultivate are focus, clarity, and strategy.  As an axe can cut deeply, it is imperative to aim it well, so keep your goals in mind.
