Yin Chaio or Yin Qiao

Also known as Honeysuckle and Forsythia Powder, is mainly used to support the Lungs and outer body layers.  It is most often recommended at the onset of a cold or flu because it can help to decrease severity and duration of the illness.  It is appropriate for short term use, and can be taken as a preventative if exposure to febrile illness occurs.

Honeysuckle (orange) flower Epsilon Acupuncture

This Formula has two leading herbs; Honeysuckle (Jin Yin Hua), and Forsythia (Lian Qiao).  They are both powerhouse herbs for dispersing wind, clearing heat, and relieving toxicity.

Other herbs in this formula help to:

  • stop cough
  • resolve phlegm
  • relieve thirst
  • benefit the throat
  • benefit Lung Qi

Chinese Medicine Theory:

It is thought that illness can enter the body through the surface layers, and progress into deeper layers.  This formula releases the surface layers, preventing furthering of the disease process.  It is a cooling formula, recommended for those who feel hot, have thirst, and perhaps have redness, itching, or other heat signs.

In Warm Disease theory (Wen Bing) this is a Wei stage formula - treating the outermost protective qi layer.  This layer is symptomatic at the onset of pandemic febrile disease.  The pathological changes are present in the lungs and skin.
